I have been playing drums and percussion for over 15 years and have a vast amount of experience playing different genres in gig venues from small cafes to large concert halls (such as the Royal Albert Hall) and even performing onboard HMS Belfast.
I have played live gigs and recorded in studios with big bands, function bands and original groups. These experiences mean I know what is expected of a drummer in each situation and how to adapt to give the best performance each time!
When I teach I like to make each lesson as fun and informative as possible for the student. Every student has different preferences for what they would like to learn, be it rock, pop, metal or jazz.
I like to use the student's preferred genre to help teach them the basics such as technique, reading music, ear training and how to play in a group.
With these concepts mastered the student will be able to discover other genres and styles of drumming with the building blocks they need to be able to play along and learn about the new style.
My preferred syllabus to teach from is Trinity Guildhall because it develops techniques which are essential to many styles of drumming through various exercises and pieces.
I understand that grades are not for everyone and so for students who do not wish to follow a graded syllabus I have a large amount of resources and hand-outs with exercises and techniques that challenge even the most competent drummers. Furthermore, these materials help to teach the student about the history of the genre they are playing and introduces them to some of the drumming greats.
My specialty is within jazz and rock, having played these styles for the majority of my drumming career. However, I have also played fusion and pop music for a long time. I have gone into lots of details in the playing styles of these genres and the various sub-genres they contain. However, I also have large amounts of experience playing other genres such as latin, metal, and hip-hop.
