I have many years experience, both as a guitar player and teacher. As a performer I've played in a variety of groups and in a wide range of settings. I've played in groups ranging from duos, to quintets, to 16-piece gospel bands and at events ranging from bar and cafe gigs, private and corporate parties, weddings, charity events, recitals and concerts. I play both electric and acoustic guitar.
I've been teaching guitar for 16 years and have taught a vast range of students, from beginners to advanced, young and old, and from all walks of life. I teach both electric and acoustic, plectrum and fingerstyle.
I try to make my teaching as well-balanced and holistic as possible, with the aim of getting my students to fulfill their musical potential. I will tailor lessons so that they learn the music they want to learn, at a level that's appropriate for them. I like to teach music theory, where appropriate, so that the student can understand what they are playing and to enable them to apply their knowledge to learning away from the lesson.
I also encourage students to develop their creativity. This could involve improvisation, songwriting, arranging or recording.
I utilise all the mainstream syllabi, including Rockschool, Associated Board, LCM (RGT) and Trinity. The particular playing style and musical aspirations of the student will determine which of these I would choose.
If a student doesn't wish to take an exam, then I will use a variety of materials which could include, for example, my own chord charts, backing tracks for popular songs, or improvisation backing tracks.
The main styles I play and teach are rock, pop, blues, soul, funk, and elements of classical, jazz, folk and country. I teach various aspects of music that relate to these styles, including- chord knowledge, harmony, chord progressions, specific techniques (e.g. stringbending, double-stopping, octaves), improvisation, rhythm playing, scales and arpeggios, composition.
I am a songwriter myself so can help those that are interested in writing their own songs. We'd look at song structure, harmony, developing melody, rhythm and groove, and lyrics, among other things. I can also help with arranging the song with a view to creating a demo.

I teach both at my place and at the students homes. There may be small travelling fees for the latter, which will vary depending on the distance travelled.

Having been tutored by Julian for nearly four years, I find him to be an excellent teacher. He has alot of patience, which is needed at times, and has a very good musical understanding. I would recommend him to anyone wanting to learn guitar."
Julian is a fantastic guitar tutor. He is flexible to your own individual learning style, whether that be learning from an exam board syllabus or playing for fun. In my experience, he has helped me break down full songs into manageable parts to practise. We have studied the rhythm, tone and technique of everything we have played together and because of it I am a more competent guitar player."
I have been having lessons for one and a half years now. Julian has a fantastic way of teaching. He is very patient, motivating and encourages you every time to take it a little further. When I decided to book lessons with Julian I thought I would just learn a few basics for a few months and then just continue to progress at home on my own, but it is just so enjoyable that I continued with lessons once a week ever since and I am always looking forward to it. I have learned so much in theory and practice that I am now even planning to sign up for a music exam! Julian's talent is a blessing and I highly recommend him."
