I have 19 years experience of teaching drum kit and percussion to all ages/abilities. This includes private lessons at my house, as well as in various schools around West Yorkshire; Fulneck School, Ghyll Royd, Bradford Girls Grammar, Prince Henrys, All Saints Otley, Bramhope Primary. My teaching in schools has also included running (and writing the musical arrangements for) soul bands, rock clubs, samba groups, steel pan groups. During this time, I have put hundreds of drummers/percussionists of all ages through various graded exams, the vast majority of them passing with Merits and Distinctions.
I have taught guitar at Ghyll Royd Prep School since 2006. Students have performed in various school concerts and productions as soloists and as part of the school band. I have put students through the Rockschool guitar exams up to grade 3 and they have all passed with distinction.
I also have extensive professional performing experience including being musical director/drummer on cruise ships, playing percussion on national theatre tours, drumming in wedding/cover bands, latin bands, jazz bands, ceilidh bands. I bring all of this wealth of playing experience to my teaching.
I believe in giving all students, regardless of instrument, a solid grounding in counting and reading from which all other aspects of playing can stem. Once a student understands how rhythms are constructed, then they are free to develop their own variations with confidence and the student is empowered to work out for themselves how a rhythm fits together, rather than forever being dependant on the teacher playing something and then the student simply copying what they have heard.
Drum kit: I use graded books as the back bone of my teaching; Rockschool, Trinity Drum kit, Trinity Rock & Pop, ABRSM percussion (depending on the students interests). I flesh these out with numerous exercise sheets that I have developed over the years as well as drawing on my own extensive playing experience of various styles to go beyond the notes written in the graded books. I always try to expand on any technical exercises presented in the books with musical applications of that technique.
Guitar: For beginners I use The Guitar Method for Young Beginners series of 3 books which leads nicely onto the Rockschool grade 1 book. For classical, finger-picking style I use The Guitarists Way series which can led onto the ABRSM guitar grades.
As I have studied and performed many styles of music, I can usually help a student develop in whichever area of music they are interested in.
As I play various other instruments ( bass, piano, violin) I can demonstrate to students various aspects of another instruments role within a music group that enhances the drummer/guitarist's understanding of how they fit into the musical jigsaw puzzle that makes a good group work in any musical style work.
I usually teach either online or in person from my music studio at my home in Leeds, Yorkshire, LS17. Due to the Corona Virus, I'm currently only offering online lessons. Due to my teaching style being very much focused on the student's comprehension of a rhythm through counting and reading rather than simply copying me, I've found that online lessons work extremely well, even with absolute beginners who have never played an instrument before. Written materials are either bought by the student so they have them at their end, or I will text/what'sapp photos of relevant sheets through to them. All of my students, young and old who were having face to face lessons, have moved to online lessons since the end of March. They have all continued to study with me and all reported back a sense of still improving and enjoying the lessons, despite the change of format. I'm happy to answer any questions you may have re online learning.
