Joe Mathers
Qualifications:
ABRSM Grade 5 Theory
RGT Electric Guitar Grade 8
Experience:
I began studying jazz guitar under Adrian Miller in London at 14. This gave me a sharp grasp of jazz theory harmony and the rhythms as well as the mechanics of playing through key changes. I have taught myself how to read music and have developed an appreciation and love of classical and folk guitar styles.
I also have recently taken up the mandolin, which I play in a traditional folk band and have done various gigs around the country. I have been teaching guitar for two years, which I still find to be an exciting activity. I take great pleasure in helping others find enjoyment and make progress in learning a beautiful art.
Teaching Style:
My experience with a great many styles of playing allows me to adapt my lessons to suit the individuals preferences regarding musical taste.
I have a detailed knowledge of music theory and like to work this in to lessons with more advanced students as it is a valuable tool in understanding how music works. I also teach the art of reading music. Sometimes overlooked by students it is a amazing skill to have as it allows you to play some beautiful music and is far superior to tablature.
I am dedicated to the belief that anyone can learn a musical instrument. All it requires is a bit of practice and confidence. I help students to understand what practice means and with this comes the confidence to play for oneself and others.
I believe the role of a teacher is to help students to work out things for themselves and adopt a role as facilitator when appropriate. This method encourages students to think about the guitar more in depth leading to fast progress.

I tend to tailor lessons to an individuals requirements but if necessary can teach to the RGT syllabus which would lead to taking various grades if desired.
